Put the Fun in Fitness

What the fit??? Fitness can be fun?

Fitness can be scary. Just the thought of “being active” can lead to anxiety. Where to start? What if I can’t keep up? How do I keep it from being a boring, daunting task?

In our childhood, being active was never a “had to do.” It was more of a “got to do.”  For example, we “got to” ride bikes, we “got to” go to roller skating parties, play 4 square on the blacktop, learn kickball in PE, etc.  Field Day was THE event of the school year - filled with relay races, tug of war and hopping with friends in potato sacks. All of those “got to do” games and activities were actually keeping our bodies healthy.

Then, we grow up, and exercise and movement become a “have-to-do” versus a “get-to-do.” We have to go to the gym. We have to take a walk. We have to get off of our phones and computers and do something active.

Let’s put the fun back in fitness. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous and hard. Movement is a gift that God gave us, and it’s even more enjoyable when we do it together.

Trade the happy hour for a power hour of walking and talking. Grab your kiddos for an impromptu dance party (skill not required:)). Pick up the leaves in your yard. Add some movement to your morning beauty routine (i.e. lunges while blow-drying your hair). It doesn’t matter what you do, just move! You’ll be surprised at how you feel adding in even a little bit of movement. And your presence with your children or younger adults will be motivation for them to make activity a priority, getting them off of devices and social media and on the move.

And if you’re like me, an all or nothing kinda girl who does well with direction and a plan, I’d love to help. Email me, catherine@eatmovefun.com
